Invisible mending

Invisible mending

NOTE: Invisible Mending is a process type, and can easily be confused with the result. The mend may show depending upon these characteristics

Dynasty Drycleaners incorporates Cocoon Mending Service for your Invisible Mending needs. Cocoon has been servicing Perth for over half a Century, and utilises the services of 2 Tailors who have a combined 70 years of experience.

There are 2 methods of Invisible Mending – Piece and Thread weaving, and each method has qualities that sometimes get better results depending on the fabric weave type. Darning is a 3rd process, however the result is always more visible than invisible mending.

Piece Weaving is a process where a whole square piece of fabric is taken from another (unnoticed) area of the garment and woven over the affected area of fabric. The fabric taken (usually from inside the top outside jacket pocket) is replaced with a similar fabric. The square is frayed to expose 1cm lengths of yarns on all 4 sides, then the experienced Tailor uses a magnifying glass and needle to insert each 1cm length of exposed yarn into the line of the weave. Each yarn is then needled through the centre of the existing fabric yarns. This process s repeated until all 4 sides of the piece is woven in, finishing at the exact starting point. The final stage is to use a strong thin translucent thread to tie the existing and new fabric together, by zig-zagging all the way around. Each weave type below uses a different structure for insertion of the piece yarns.

This process is often best for:

  • Basket
  • Gabardine (2, 3, or 4 weave)
  • Twill
  • Herringbone
  • Birdseye

Thread Weavingis a process where threads are taken from other (unnoticed) areas of the garment and woven into the fabric individually. It finishes with the loose ends tucked into the fabric inside – so the loose yarns are not visible for the finished job.

This process is often best for:

  • Crape
  • Knit
  • Moire
  • Felted wool

Aside from the weave type, the composition of the yarn (fibre content) and fineness of the fabric will impact the result of the mend. We have the skills and ability to both types of invisible mending.p> Please visit our City store Monday to Friday 9.00am – 3.00pm for an appraisal – no appointment necessary
