Piece Weaving is a process where a whole square piece of fabric is taken from another (unnoticed) area of the garment and woven over the affected area of fabric. The fabric taken (usually from inside the top outside jacket pocket) is replaced with a similar fabric. The square is frayed to expose 1cm lengths of yarns on all 4 sides, then the experienced Tailor uses a magnifying glass and needle to insert each 1cm length of exposed yarn into the line of the weave. Each yarn is then needled through the centre of the existing fabric yarns. This process s repeated until all 4 sides of the piece is woven in, finishing at the exact starting point. The final stage is to use a strong thin translucent thread to tie the existing and new fabric together, by zig-zagging all the way around. Each weave type below uses a different structure for insertion of the piece yarns.

• Basket
• Gabardine (2, 3, or 4 weave)
• Twill
• Herringbone
• Birdseye

Thread Weaving is a process where threads are taken from other (unnoticed) areas of the garment and woven into the fabric individually. It finishes with the loose ends tucked into the fabric inside – so the loose yarns are not visible for the finished job.

This process is often best for:

• Crape
• Knit
• Moire
• Felted wool

Considerations 
Aside from the weave type, the composition of the yarn (fibre content) and fineness of the fabric will impact the result of the mend.
